In the Northern beaches, many homes were partially washed away, with major erosion of backyards and balconies, in Collaroy. Many people were asked to be excavated around 6pm on Sunday (5th June) and could not return home until Monday morning. In the city and around Central Coast, about 30,000 homes were left without power. Another 20,000 properties on the Essential Energy, Endeavour Energy and Ausgrid networks were also left without power as fallen trees had brought down wires and power poles. Additionally, several Vivid Sydney light installations were damaged by strong winds and severe rains. The increase of water levels also caused major delays and problems on traffic and public transportation, particularly in the West. In the West, water levels reached a peak of 9.7m in some low lying areas.
The NSW SES has about 9,000 requests for assistance.
Aftermath:
The Insurance Council of Australia has declared an “insurance catastrophe” and said that as of 9am this morning (Tuesday 7th June), they have received 14,500 claims across Queensland, NSW and Victoria, with estimated insured losses of $56 million. It is expected that the figure will keep increasing in the coming days.
However, many insurance claims may not be paid as Spokesman Campbell Fuller said, “Home insurance policies typically do not cover damage caused by actions of the sea, such as coastal erosion, king tides or storm surges.”
